AAOS Arrives in Orlando With New
Every year, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons’ (AAOS) an- nual meeting is a meaty event for medtech industry players to gather and showcase their technology. The event usually brings approximately 30,000
attendees—exhibitors, surgeons/physicians, and other healthcare industry professionals—together to learn skills and network.
Naturally, with the meeting being held in Orlando, Fla., this year, one of the
social programs available to attendees and families is a trip to Disneyworld.
The event will feature 31 symposia by surgeons in their various specialty fields;
more than 900 paper presentations and 575 posters highlighting the latest in scientific
and clinical studies; more than 245 instructional courses offering experience-based
surgical techniques developed by surgeons; 32 case study presentations; and a“game
changer” paper session that will highlight research that is particularly noteworthy.
This year, AAOS is debuting three new session types. One is the“showdown,”
which will feature orthopedic colleagues debating healthcare-related topics and
surgical techniques that demonstrate their point of view. The audience will choose
the winner of each debate. “Flash five” will feature experts drilling down on hot
topics in just five minutes each. And“The way I see it” will feature presenters opining on specific top-of-mind issues.
The presidential guest speaker is Roger Staubach, executive chairman of JLL
Americas, a financial and professional services firm specializing in real estate. Staubach is also famous for his time as a quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys. Recognized for his business skills, civic and charitable work as well as his abilities on
the grid iron, Staubach has been bestowed many honors—Commercial Property
News’“Corporate Services Executive of the Year” (four times), the 2006 Congressional Medal of Honor“Patriot Award,” the NCAA“Teddy Roosevelt Award” for
being one of the“100 Most Influential NCAA Student-Athletes,” the United States
Naval Academy“Distinguished Graduate,”and, in 2009, the Vince Lombardi Award
